The Erosion Of Civil Rights

First they came for the drug users
and I did not speak out
because I was not a drug user.
Then they came for the foreigners
and I did not speak out
because I was not a foreigners.
Then they came for the political activists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a political activists.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

The names may change but the process is the same.

This is true. But what is being done to combat it?

What is being done

Well, the poem says "I said nothing" but I am speaking out.
It may not seem like much but it is beter than nothing.
People like Michael Moore,
Al Franken, and
Molly Ivins are also speaking out.

Groups like WorkingForChange
and MoveOn.org are speaking out and taking action.

Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War speaks out.

"During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

I'm doing what I can.

Re: What is being done

*nod* It's important to take action, that's for sure. I think disseminating information is a good step. It's important for more and more people to know what's really going on.

What's the next step once information is being put out there? How is change effectively created?

Re: What is being done

Well, I believe in Cultural Materialism.

So I think "cultural evolution results from the gradual accumulation of useful traits through a process of trial and error."

The way to influence change is to offer solutions to the problems people face. Technological solutions and philosophical solution.

People will move to a new technology (or a new philosophy) if it offers a clear solution to a problem they face.

Right now the American public is more afraid of "Islamic Terrorists" then "the erosion of civil rights". "Islamic terrorists" are crazy people blowing up building and killing inocent Americans. Whereas "civil rights" are something whiny minority groups go on about.

The trick is to make people feel more threatened by the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, and the Faith-Based Initiative than foriegn terrorists.

Re: What is being done

I think on Election Day there should be massive monster truck rallies, country music concerts, and big wrasslin' events. That should draw in the people who still think that "Osama Hussein" is still out there eating babies and keep them in bread and circuses while everyone else votes for Clark.

(Me? I'll be voting early so I don't miss too much wrasslin'. ;-)
