The history of money

The other day J asked me where the idea of written checks to pay for things came from. I didn't know.

Today I did a little research and I found some neat stuff on this site Origins of Money and of Banking it looks reputable.

I had heard of, and even seen, some of the more unusual coins, such as the Chinese tool currencies, and sword money.

But I hadn't known that banks and checking existed before coins
The Invention of Banking and Coinage

Basically a check is just a note you write to your bank telling them to give some of your money to someone other than you. It looks like check writing is a natural outgrowth of banking. They did both in Ancient Mesopotamia between 3000 and 2000 B.C.E.

What qualifies as money is very interesting. I am a Bowie fan but I didn't know about Bowie Bonds "David Bowie was the first singer to issue bonds using future royalties as security."
