Science Fiction Writer Octavia Butler, 58, Dies
And science fiction writer Octavia Butler has died at the age of 58. She died on Friday night [Feb 24, 2006] after a fall outside her home in Washington state. Her best-known work included "Parable of the Talents" and "Kindred." Butler was considered to be one of the first African-American women to break into the world of science fiction. Jane Jewell, of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, said "She is a world-class science fiction writer in her own right. She was one of the first and one of the best to discuss gender and race in science fiction." Butler joined us four months ago on Democracy Now:
OCTAVIA BUTLER: "I'm going to read a verse or two [from “Parable of the Talents".]. And keep in mind these were written early in the 1990s. But I think they apply forever, actually. This first one, I have a character in the books who is, well, someone who is taking the country fascist and who manages to get elected President and, who oddly enough, comes from Texas. And here is one of the things that my character is inspired to write about, this sort of situation. She says:
"Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be lied to. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery."

Science Fiction Writer Octavia Butler on Race, Global Warming and Religion

I’m not really fond of her writing, It is a bit too political for me. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with her, about a lot of things, she was just a bit to depressing for me. I just heard her read that quote on my way in to work this morning and it is so apt to our current government. George W. Bush is clearly a coward, a fool, a thief, and a liar, And the Republicans are a whole pack of thieves, liars, and tyrants.

I really do despair of our ever driving the corruption out of the US government at this point.

I mean really
Total Information Awareness Lives On Inside the National Security Agency
More than two years ago Congress halted plans for a controversial plan called Total Information Awareness to create the world's largest surveillance database to track your phone calls, purchases, Internet usage, reading material, banking transactions. The National Journal has now revealed the program has quietly continued inside the NSA.

Why We Fight (2005) (documentary) Directed by Eugene Jarecki

The thing is, when you have a group of people who’s income depends on war and you let them decide when to declare war (because war is their job) then eventually they are going to find a reason to go to war.

Look at the cost of this war, the money flowing out of the pockets of the poor and the middle class into the pockets of the rich.

The thing is, when you have a group of people whose income depends on war and you let them decide when to declare war (because benefitting financially from war is their business) then eventually they are going to find a reason to go to war.

How right you are !

And in my opinion, 'Nothing, Absolutely Nothing excuses violence, or cruelty, physical or mental.'

Either I am unfit to live in this world, or the war-mongers are.

That Total Awareness NSA link does not work dear. Dubya is also sancimonious most of all though, don't forget that one on your list!

Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought

Thanks for the heads up on the links (Damn MSWord and it's automatic "smart" quotes)

Well, sancimonious wasn't on Octavia's list. What would be the logical repercusion of choosing a sancimonious leader?

Re: Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought

Thats what I see as his worst trait. And so far what I've seen is that the leader is somehow not to be questioned, due to the mantle of "everything I do I do like I should as a good Xian." I suck with words, but something to that effect.

Re: Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought

Ah, part of the problem is that "sanctimonious" is an adjative not a noun,

But hypocrite might work:
To be led by a hypocrite is to abandonment one's principles.

Re: Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought

Sanctimonious asshat works for me, but I get you.

Re: Sanctimonious asshat

To be led by a sanctimonious asshat is to put your head up your sanctimonious ass.

Re: Sanctimonious asshat

There you go, just a win-win kinda phrase! LOL

Re: sanctimonious

I do seem to have wandered away from your meaning though.
sanctimonious means "falsely pious", acting sanctified when you really aren't. which led me to hypocrit.

But you were emphasizing the "I'm above reproach" meaning which is more like Self-rightious than hypocritical. The only nouns I could find for that are

Tartuffe - a hypocrite who pretends to religious piety (after the protagonist in a play by Moliere)

Pharisee - a self-righteous or sanctimonious person

To be led by a Pharisee is to abandonment one's own principles.

But I don't think that is as obvious.

Re: sanctimonious

Sanctimonious is exactly how I see him acting. He tries to wear the mantle of Christianity, but I do not see that he is one at all....yet he's led many to believe he is. Many have called him a good Xian man, but a truly good one would not have done what he's done. I not sure that Pharisee applies, since those he leads believe that he's doing the right thing. They are not abandoning their principles, so much as they're believing the lies. He says he supports Veterans, yet his policies do not, but unless someone checks liberal sources, how are they to know that?

Tartuffe is a great word, except its an awful one to say or have anybody recognize.
