"Henry Poole Is Here" (2008)

I'm starting to like Luke Wilson. I liked him in "My Super Ex-Girlfriend". Where he played a nice guy.

In "Henry Poole Is Here" he plays another nice guy. Henry Poole has been told he is dying so he buys a house in the neighborhood where he grew up and settles down to stay drunk until he dies. But his neighbors won't let him be. The nearsighted cashier at the grocery store wants to know why he's so sad. The silent little girl who lives on one side of him keeps recording his conversations. The religious lady on the other side thinks that Jesus has appeared in the stucco on his back porch.

I was a bit worried that this was going to be a total glurge, or a farce but it was really sweet. It doesn't make any statements about religion, just the importance of accepting life and moving on. Some people have complained that this movie is too "miraculous" but I felt it left room for doubt about the supernatural. It didn't come down on one side or the other.

Not a comedy. This seemed like straight drama to me. I was drawn into the story and not bored for a second.

(Kaaren would like this movie)Error running style: Died in S2::run_code running EntryPage::print(): Can't use string ("") as a subroutine ref while "strict refs" in use at (eval 6044)[/home/lj/src/s2/S2.pm:203] line 1719.
