"Swing Vote" (2008)

Through an unlikely series of events an alcoholic factory worker will cast the deciding vote in the US presidential election.

I remember seeing the trailer for this in the theater and deciding to watch it on video. There is a good subplot about the relationship between Bud (Kevin Costner) and his precocious daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll). But over all this is a moral tale about the importance of participating in the political process.

It is a bit Leftist since wanting everyone to vote is a Leftist position and although some people consider Costner's character to be caricature of a typical Red Stater he has a moderate position on Gay Rights and Abortion. His position on Ecology is more Left than Right but that seemed fairly typical too me. He's a sport fisherman and wants to be able to fish in the river. Some people complain because we never find out who wins the election. But the movie isn't about who wins, or who should win, it is about taking responsibility for your vote. It doesn't say Vote Republican or Vote Democrat it just says Vote.

Not really a comedy. The comedians all play politicians, and watching them bend over to get Bud's vote is a bit funny but it is more of an educational drama than a comedy.
