"The Civilization of Maxwell Bright" (2005)

I can see why I never heard of this movie, it's a hard sell. A chauvinist jerk orders a mail order bride then finds out he is dying of cancer. At first he blames his problems on his Buddhist wife's "Satan worshiping" but eventually he converts to Buddhism and finds peace.

From the description I thought it was going to be about a jerk who shapes up under the influence of a mail order bride who isn't as docile as he had hoped. The standard sit-com plot. But it's not that at all. It's a chick flick about "one person dying slowly" I cried.

Patrick Warburton's character (Maxwell Bright) is a real jerk but eventually I came to feel sympathy for him. The sex scene on their wedding night was very nicely done. There is lots of swearing and male full frontal nudity in the first scene.

I liked the contrast between his luxurious life at the beginning of the movie with a big house and lots of 'stuff' and after he gets cancer his life pares down to Buddhist simplicity. Actually his life begins to simplify as soon as his wife arrives. She leads him to Enlightenment just by being there.

I don't believe I've ever seen Warburton in a noncomedic role. Interesting.
yes he does a very good job here.

And Happy Solstice to you too.
BTW, happy solstice!
