Avatar in 3D!

B took me to see Avatar in 3D. Now I know what everyone is talking about.

I can totally see the big blue smurfycats, the evil machines come to cut down the forest plot from "FernGully", the solder who goes native plot from "Dances with Wolves", the native girl who takes in the enemy (and talks to the grandmother tree) from "Pocahontas". But with a happy ending.

The CGI was amazing! And the unique plants and animals were very creative. Although there were a lot of ferns and bamboo as well. The landscape and even the plants and animals look very much like the art of Roger Dean particularly: Floating Islands and Morning Dragon.

I'm glad we saw it in 3D. It took me a while to get used to the 3D but they showed a few 3D previews before the movie stated to help with that.

This strictly a sci-fi story. The natives don't have a mystical relationship with their planet, they have a biological connection with their planet. The relevant sci-fi tropes are "sentient planet" and "native religion turns out to be be literal truth".

Our planet doesn't have nervous system or any sentience, beyond us. The planet in the movie does. Which explains how the natives with bows and arrows can win against tanks and guns. Because really, any other explanation would be insulting to the indigenous people of the earth who lost that battle.
