Tamale Pie for dinner

Tamale Pie
Ingredients
Meat mixture:
*1lb ground beef
*1 med. onion
*3 cloves garlic
*1 can (14oz) diced tomatoes w/ green chilies
*1 T chili powder
*Salt & pepper
Corn mixture:
*1-1/2 cups corn meal
*2 T flour
*2 T sugar
*1/2 t salt
*3 t baking powder
*2 beaten eggs
*2/3 cup milk

Instructions
Heat the oven to 350°F
Brown the ground beef on the stove. Dice the onion and garlic, add them to the beef and sauté.
Add the tomatoes, corn, and spices and let simmer while you make the corn topping.
Mix all the ingredients for the corn topping. Pour half of the corn mixture into a 2qt casserole.
Put the meat mixture on top of that. Cover with remaining corn mixture.
Bake for 25-30 min until the corn topping is brown and crispy.
Serve as is, or top with salsa, sour cream, and shredded cheese

I decided to put a sprinkle of cinnamon and cocoa powder in the meat mixture. It tastes very good.

I don't have any corn meal, but I do have 5lbs of Masa Harena. Then I discovered that I have no eggs or milk. I substituted water for the eggs and milk. Which produced a stiff dough.

So instead of the usual corn bread this recipe usually produces I got something much more like a Tamale Pie: a half-inch Masa crust with a topping of meat, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and spices, covered with a layer of shredded cheddar cheese. All baked for a half hour until the cheese melted and dough was cooked.

I don't have any sour cream either so I topped it with some low fat Greek yogurt.
