Writer's Block: Marital license

Do you think a marriage license should have a renewal or expiration date, just like a driver's license?

Strangely enough marriage licenses do have expiration dates. A marriage licenses gives you the right (license) to get married in a certain time period. I think a NY marriage license is only good for 60 days. Marriage certificates don't expire. A marriage license is filed with the Clerk's office after the marriage ceremony takes place. After that occurs, the Clerk's office can issue you a certified copy of your marriage certificate upon request. Marriage certificates are not automatically sent to couples.

Once you get married you are in a contractual agreement and may have a certificate documenting that fact. Most people specify that the contract is "until death do us part". Most people feel that "until we do not feel like doing it any more" lacks commitment.

I have no philosophical objection to limited duration personal contracts. I think all marriages should be treated as personal contracts between consenting adults. That means legalizing same sex marriage and polygamy (animals and children can not legally enter into contracts).
