Vocabulary

In today's Weregeek Mark is complaining about having to learn gaming vocabulary such as "railroad" and "MacGuffin". My problem is that these are not just gaming terms, they are in general use, and they did not originate with gamers.

Railroad, vb (tr) Informal to force (a person) into (an action) with haste or by unfair means.

MacGuffin, n (film) a plot element that catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot; "the MacGuffin was a key element of Alfred Hitchcock's films"
Wikipedia has a more detailed explanation about MacGuffins

Yeah, unless he was homeschooled by wolves, he should know terms like that and be able to apply them to gaming situations.
I didn't know MacGuffin. ::homskool'd by wulvz::
Well, MacGuffin is a film term popularized by Alfred Hitchcock. It is not used much outside the discussion of story plots. So if you don't do film or literary criticism you might not encounter it.

I feel that the dictionary definition misses a major point. A MacGuffin is something that's *only* purpose is to drive the plot. The Maltese Falcon is the classic example of a MacGuffin.
I was just joking in my comment. :)

I do dabble in just-for-fun criticism, but I'm not in the community enough to just know the word, nor have I heard it used in the real world. Well, I probably have come to think of it. Just not more than once or twice so it didn't make an impression with me.

However, now I know and knowing is half the battle!
"Communism was just a red herring!"
I don't understand this comment at all.
From the movie Clue
Oh!

Would it make me the worst person in the world if I'd never seen Clue.....?? ^^;;;;
Nah, it's not a great movie, but it has a cultish place in my heart.
Oh, come on! That's is, as far as I've seen, the ONE movie where Tim Curry is NOT the bad guy!
SPOILER ALERT!

Um... Tim Curry IS the bad guy in "Clue".
Not necessarily! I've seen the movie THREE times. (^_^)
Oh durr, I forgot.
I see "MacGuffin" and my brain goes to "McGruff" and then I wonder what a trenchcoat wearing basset hound is doing in a gaming conversation.

(WAS homeschooled, but maternal unit more of a Ferangi then a wolf)
