The Starlings are gone

They must have left sometime last week. There has been no activity at the nest this week.

I always thought birds "lived" in their nests but it seems (Starlings at least) just raise their chicks and leave.

You would think any animal would chose to stay in a shelter once it has built it. When not caring for chicks Starlings roost in trees with large groups of other starlings and no nests. I guess there is safety in numbers.

Could you imagine if human beings only lived in houses when we were raising children and moved out to wander the streets, homeless, when the children were grown? And the children would be homeless until they had children. Of course it takes years, not days, to raise human children, so that might be part of it.

I'm just chuckling, picturing the starlings "roasting" in the trees....fits, with the weather we've been having! I think it's awesome that they abandon the nest and live free after raising chicks, and have wished, more than once, that I was a bird. (Oh, and I originally typed "woshed" instead of "wished." I'm not immune to typos, it's just sometimes they are so darn FUNNY!)
A lot of birds do this, actually. Many build new nests year after year.
I can understand building a new nest next year if they go south for the winter.

Actually there have been flies buzzing around the nest lately. I wonder if the birds abandon the nest for sanitary reasons. The chicks certainly don't go outside to poo.
