CSA Box #3

This week's box contained:
1 qt Strawberries
1 bunch Hakurei Turnips
1 bunch Rainbow Chard
1 bag Spicy mix greens
1 bag Field greens
1 bag Baby Arugula
1 small bunch Basil
1 bunch Scallions

I still have:
1 bag Baby Red Russian Kale
1 bunches Radishes
1 bunch Scallions
1 bag of Spinach

I finally ate the bag of field greens from the second box as salads. And since I already have a jar of basil leaves soaking in olive oil. I cooked up some pasta then sauteed some garlic in basil oil, then threw in the new bunch of basil until the basil wilted, then threw in the pasta and tossed it with Parmesan cheese. That turned out to be every bit as good as I imagined it would be. I will need to stock up on pasta and Parmesan next month.

I've been using the scallions in my breakfast eggs with a couple strips of bacon. I intend to try the Piggery's bacon next month. It's expensive. I hope it is worth it.

I think I'm going to try a Frittata tonight. I've never made one. I hope the spinach has not died. If it has I can try the baby Russian kale instead. But I hate to waste food.

Edit: The spinach was still as crisp as the first day, for the most part. I lost a couple of leaves but most of it was still good. The frittata turned out well. I used the last of my bacon, half a large red onion, some Swiss cheese, five eggs, some milk, and all the spinach. It didn't release from the pan very well. I think that is because of the bacon, or the pan. I've been having the same problem with my morning eggs.

I also baked up some biscuits and whipped some cream for strawberry shortcake. So that takes care of the strawberries. I need to add flour to the shopping list. And I'm down to my last three eggs.

I loved the CSA when we did it. I loved trying new things I had never had before.

I started using sliced cauliflower (sauteed) instead of pasta. It gives a similar chewy consistency and it's healthier...but you have to like cauliflower, and it has to be fresh cauliflower. The stems are nommy.

Nothing wrong with cauliflower. I love roasted cauliflower florets tossed with Parmesan. Or cauliflower florets dipped in a curried cornmeal batter and fried. Or Faux-tatoes: pureed cooked cauliflower that is a good substitute for mashed potatoes. Or you chop raw cauliflower in the food processor then steam it to get a rice like consistency.

That does sound good!

IDK is not a big fan of greens, but I'm hoping he'll be willing to try a few new foods with you this week. I will also be supplementing your food budget as usual. What time on 7/1 do you think you'll be down? I have to coordinate w/Mama A for the Cuteness.

Re: That does sound good!

We shall see about IDK. I have some ideas but no expectations.

As usual I'm not sure about my schedule. Since it is the first of the month I'm thinking of stopping by my mom's to pick up my rent supplement check.

If you tell me your issues I will try not to inconvenience you.

Re: That does sound good!

Nothing major, actually. I don't get home until about 5 pm. SLB works Tuesday from 4-8, so he won't be home from 3 until I pick him up. If you're planning on being here after 5, everything's fine. If you're planning to come up before 5 pm, I'll need Mama A to watch the Cuteness.

Re: That does sound good!

Ok I'll be there after 5.

You should probably make sure IDK has dinner.
