Art, Earth art, earthworks, Andy Goldsworthy

I was watching Andy Goldsworthy's Rivers & Tides and it got me thinking about art. We tend to talk about art being the expression of ideas, but sometimes art just says "Look". Well, Ok so all visual art say s "Look", but some visual art says "Look at war", "Look at poverty", "Look at society", and some just says "Look at how pretty that is". And there is nothing wrong with looking at the pretty.

Earth art and earthworks - Earth art (also called "land art") refers to a movement of artists with wide ranging goals, but all created in nature, employing such materials as stones, dirt, and leaves. "Earthworks" is the same movement.

The Lightning Field, 1977, by the American sculptor Walter De Maria, is recognized internationally as one of the late-twentieth century's most significant works of art.

Spiral Jetty, 1970, by Robert Smithsonis, located on the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

Earth as Art Gallery! Here you can view our planet through the beautiful images taken by the Landsat-7 satellite - and most recently, the Terra Satellite's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). This gallery of images uses the visceral avenue of art to convey the thrilling perspective of the Earth that satellites provide to the viewer.
