Controlled Chaos

Watching The Daily Show and the Colbert Report online now means watching commercials. Today I have seen the trailer for the new Transformers movie eight times.

I noticed something about the CGI explosions. They are very orderly. Whatever is exploding (ships, ground, streets full of cars) comes apart in a wave that either moves toward the viewer across the ground, or out from a center point (for explosions coming toward the viewer through walls).

I guess they found a formula for making things explode that looks good and they use it for everything.

I noticed the same thing with 3D animation of faces in Pixar films. They have a standard formula for showing emotions so after a while everyone starts looking the same.
